Info about the Forsyth Technical Community College budget office, registering in a technical degree program to develop job skills, and taking free practice tests online. Which college degrees will give you the best chances of finding employment after graduation? Some students select a major because it offers practical training that will be valuable in the workplace. Other students choose their major simply because they enjoy the subject material. Majoring in a technical field demands a lot of concentrated study, but the financial rewards are equally impressive. The most popular college major is business administration, split evenly between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the vast majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, the fields of education, English and liberal arts dominate the list.

Online courses foster faculty innovation in teaching, by requiring professors to develop new course materials. Every class is recorded and stored on a remote server, which allows students to replay difficult sections as many times as is needed. If you so choose, online education gives you the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript. Alternatively, you may be able to complete online credits for a grade. Advanced Placement exams (AP Exams) are offered in a variety of subjects, offering college credit for classes that you have taken. Test yourself with free practice exams, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests. If you earn a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam, you may be granted advanced placement in college.

Online Courses - MOOCs

Forsyth Technical Community College budget officeCollege degree majors with high starting-salaries after graduation include physical sciences, business administration, and engineering. If you remain true to your career interests, not just going after salary, your overall job earnings will increase as you gain experience. However, if your focus is more on salary alone, there's a higher risk that you'll suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers later on.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year college, and still you may earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. By taking some of your required degree courses online, you may be able to graduate earlier, thus saving money on tuition. If you're currently employed, you can take online courses in your spare time to advance your career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing cloud-based software, interactive platforms such as Blackboard, and mobile apps.

An online degree may be just as marketable as a college degree that was earned on campus. Udemy online learning is a new startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Similarly, Khan Academy now offers over 4,000 micro-lectures served through YouTube. Coursera, a competing software platform, has millions of enrolled students from around the world. Recently, MIT announced that it's open courseware platform will be available to students and instructors at no cost.

Financial Aid Awards

The US Department of Education distributes $150 billion per year in grants, work-study, and low-interest student loans. Surprisingly, elite colleges and universities offer the greatest financial aid opportunities for students, due to their enormous endowments. To begin the search for financial aid, you'll need to fill out the FAFSA, the federal student aid application. Please note that financial aid deadlines are strictly enforced, so submit your application early. Literally millions of students that would have qualified for some financial aid didn't even apply for it, or were late in submitting required forms. The official FAFSA website is fafsa.ed.gov. Parents should maintain financial records for at least three years, including tax forms and any business records.

Grants, Scholarships, and Loans

A Federal Pell Grant, unlike student loans, does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have never earned a bachelors or professional degree. The grant distribution will depend on demonstrated financial need, according to the FAFSA application, the cost of attendance, your status as a full-time or part-time student, and your plans to attend school for a full academic year or less. You may not receive Federal Pell Grant funds from any more than one educational institution at a time.

Students who receive Federal Pell Grants and have extreme financial need will receive FSEOG grants first. The FSEOG grant program is administered directly by participating schools, so check with your financial aid office to find out if your school offers the FSEOG. Once the full amount of the school’s FSEOG funds has been awarded to students, no more FSEOG awards can be made for that particular year. This system works differently from the Federal Pell Grant Program, which provides grant funding to each eligible student.

Peterson's scholarship search is good to check not only for college scholarships, but also for the extensive resources on the college application process. US Federal student loans and some private student loans can be discharged in bankruptcy only with a showing of undue hardship. Most private loan programs are tied to one or more financial indexes, such as the BBA LIBOR Rate, plus an overhead charge. Because private loans are based on the credit history of the applicant, the overhead charge may vary. Finally, student credit cards may seem like a good short-term solution to financial need, but the interest rates are high, and credit cards often carry an annual fee. If you do end up using credit cards to meet some expenses, pay off the outstanding balance in full every month.

Nursing & Medical Job Listings

Earning a CNA degree (Certified Nursing Assistant) is the first step towards becoming a fully-qualified nurse. Most CNA programs can be completed within a few months, allowing you to join the workforce quickly. The next step in a nursing career is to become a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or LVN ( Licensed Vocational Nurse). These are year-long programs, in which you'll work under an RN distributing meds, treating wounds, and providing basic patient care.

In order to become an RN (Registered Nurse), a bachelors degree in nursing is recommended. RN's command a greater salary, and are responsible for an enlarged scope of practice over LPNs and CNAs. Students will receive classroom instruction and clinical training in a hospital setting. A 4-year BSN program allows students to further specialize in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics and mental health. After completing your nursing education, you must be licensed by the state in which you'll be practicing, given that state boards of nursing each have specific certification requirements.
